生于瑞典，5岁随家人移民美国，16岁己参加电视表演，并在爵士乐队作职业演出。1961年演出电影处女作《锦囊妙计》，两年后以青春歌舞片《欢乐春宵》走红。她的表演风格富于爆炸性，狂野的舞蹈及歌声为她嬴得“女猫王”的雅号。1971年参加《猎爱的人》演出，演技日趋成熟而成功转型。1976年以《冲破黑暗谷》一片获奥斯卡提名。除了演电影外，她每年还固定在拉斯维加斯表演 。1972年，她在拉斯维加斯登台预演，不慎从廿二尺的高空摔下，经过整容复健手术后，又重新活跃在舞台上。1984年以电视电影《欲望号街车》获广泛好评，近年则以《见色忘友》正续集的演出再度展示其风韵。
