从业经历因战事幼时多难，生于1959年法国军事撤离区的收容所，不久随家人移居美国芝加哥。成年后赴好莱坞发展，曾任布景师，1987年为导演查克罗素编写《半夜鬼上床3》的剧本，次年接着编剧罗素旧片新拍的《变形怪体》。1994年的《刺激1995》（肖申克的救赎）为其第一部自编自导的影片，一炮而红，并获奥斯卡最佳改编剧本提名。1999年的《绿色奇迹》由其编导兼制片，再次获奥斯卡最佳改编剧本及最佳影片提名。
