迈克尔·马德森1958年生于芝加哥，母亲则是得过艾美奖的编剧及制作人。他天生适合出演一些恶劣的反派。他最初接触表演是在步狼剧院，当时是在著名演员约翰马尔克维奇的下面工作。他第一次在大银幕中出现是在1982年的电影《希望破灭》、1984年的影片《与月亮赛跑》和《天赋》中出演一些小角色。1989年他在影片《再杀我一次》中以锋利的表演出色诠释了危险的杀手“文森米勒”，而受到多方的认可。1991年迈克尔·马德森又在《末路狂花》中出演了Louise的丈夫Jimmy一角，也受到不错的评价。他真正让人们记忆深刻的角色，应该算是昆汀·塔伦蒂诺的作品《落水狗》中那个说话“慢条斯理”，虐待条子的金先生（Mr.Blonde）。1993年他在影片《人鱼的童话》中出演了养父一角，他的表演让人感到惊喜。1994年他又出演了史蒂夫麦昆的影片《逃亡之路》和影片《人鱼的童话》续集。1997年他出演了影片《忠奸人》。2003年他受导演昆汀·塔伦蒂诺之邀，出演了大投资动作片《杀死比尔Ⅰ》和《杀死比尔2》，在里面出演了一位冷酷邪恶的布德。
他的妹妹维吉妮娅·马德森也是演员，拥有一半丹麦血统。维吉妮娅是1980年代美国最受欢迎的女星之一，曾于1986年被票选为好莱坞最美丽女演员之一。
