生于原德国占领区波森（现波兰），母亲是演员。早期在柏林学习表演，1934年来到伦敦，次年开始进入电影界。1936年出演“紧张大师”希契科克导演的《秘密情报网》。1945年转去美国，次年出演其第一部美国片《魔城喋血记》。到1953年回到德国时，已成为闻名遐迩的国际明星。其它主要影片有《出卖灵肉的人》、《四张招贴》、《海棠春》、《纳粹狂种》等。1986年1月因癌变去世。
