What is the sentence about?一Automobiles

What do the automobiles do?——Offer safety features

What is the nmin idea of the sentence?--automobiles offer safety features．

当然，我们不可能总是轻而易举地就能判断出哪些是主干，哪些是枝节。许多情况下还需要进行归纳总结，甚至用与作者不同的话将句子的中心意思表达出来。不过，绝大多数句子的中心意思都是关于“谁做了什么事”或“什么事情发生了或正在发生着”。再如：

A recent issue of Time magazine contained an article about attempts by

environmental groups to stop the worldwide slaughter of whales．

本句话共有21个单词，但只用8个单词便可概括出它的大意，即：

Time reported on the efforts to save whales．

2．指代关系

替代词的使用可以使文章简练、结构匀称、衔接自然，因此使用非常广泛。但是在阅读中，如果我们不明确替代词所指代的究竟是上下文中的什么内容，就可能产生理解错误。因此，在段落阅读中，我们还要弄清替代词的指代作用，保持思路畅通，把握段落大意。替代词不仅可以指代句中的成分，还可以指代上句或下旬巾的成分。

英语中的替代词主要有：

代词：they，them，it，he，his，she，her，this，that，these，those，as，which，

one．some．0ther．the former，the latter，the same等。

副词：here．there，then，SO等。

代动词：d0，doit，dothat，do SO等。

另外．英语中还常用同义词、上义词等表示指代关系。

指代题的常用提问方式有：

In the last sentence of the passage．the phrase‘‘these tools”refers to…

例如：
