拥有一张娃娃脸的马克·汉米尔1951年9月25日生于美国加处福尼亚州。父亲任职于海军，因经常迁调的关系，少年时代的马克·汉米尔得以走遍全球各大城市，并在日本住了很长一段时间。60年代末返回洛杉矶，就读于市立学院主修戏剧。1970年在校期间，曾在颇受欢迎的电视情景喜剧《比尔克劳斯时间》客串，并参加各个戏剧节目及电视长片的演出。
1977年，马克终于得到了一个天赐良机，在卢卡斯的《星球大战》系列影片中出任男主角“天行者卢克”从一个怀有大志的太空游侠，最后成长为成熟、睿智的绝地战士。这段历程给他带来巨大的收获，使其成为全球家喻户晓的明星。但也始终无法令影迷摆脱这个刻板的印象，影响了他在影坛的发展。随着该系列的结束，他又重返百老汇舞台，主演过《象人》等剧，表现不俗。近年已很少在银幕上露面，多在幕后担任配音工作。“天行者卢克”一角，已成为其表演生涯中最值得回忆的角色。
