Introduce这首歌表达的是Joan Baez和Bob Dylan间一段藕断丝连的情感。上世纪六、七十年代，这两个人是美国音乐圈最有影响的歌手，有很多人都是唱着他们的反战歌曲和民谣长大的。
分手许多年以后，在一场Joan Baez的演唱会上，唱到第三首歌的时候，Joan Baez用略带颤抖的声音说了句：“I'll be damned look what the wind brought in!”（真见鬼，什么风把你吹来了？） 随后，Bob Dylan一头乱头发在台上出现，抱着个吉他，坐在Baez身边。歌迷们沸腾了，高声欢呼，随后开始沉醉于两人合唱的《blowing in the wind》 。唱完后，Bob Dylan随即匆匆走掉，Baez眼泪汪汪地接着唱她自己写的歌《diamonds and rust》，这是把藕断丝连表达得最直白的歌词，也只有他们两人才能懂得全部含义。这首歌也为十年后他们的复合打下了伏笔。

告诉你，我已付出过代价了凡是学习民谣吉他者，当他们开始接触西洋老歌，有几首曲子是不能不会的，一方面是可以锻炼弹奏技巧，一方面是因为这些曲子旋律优美动人，历久不衰。
Joan Baez（琼拜雅）这位美国民谣之后，就有好几首这样的传世之作，如“Donna , Donna”、“The night they drove old Dixies down”及“Diamonds and rust”等。其中“Diamonds and rust”是一首难度较高的曲子。
琼拜雅的嗓音清亮、纯净，技巧成熟，许多知名作曲家都乐意提供作品给她唱，因而她比较知名的曲子大都不是自己所写，“Diamonds and rust.”是她自己谱写的歌曲中最为人熟知的一首。
这首歌的歌词冗长，意象繁复，许多人纵使查完英文生字，也无法了解其中意涵。原因是歌词中所讲的是琼拜雅个人的一段恋情。
琼拜雅于50年代末投入美国民歌运动，进入60年代，她遇见了巴布狄伦（Bob Dylan，后来被尊称为“民谣摇滚之父”最著名的作品是“Blowing in the wind”），两人惺惺相惜，彼此都十分赏识对方的才华，而开展了一段秘密恋情。
这段感情到最后无疾而终。1975年，琼拜雅写了这首曲子，以当年两人亦师亦友的感情为主轴，后来“钻石与铁锈”也被认为是她最好的一首创作曲。
“钻石”在英文中常常被比喻为“回忆里美好的事物”，有一首歌名叫“Some days are diamonds，some days are stones.”其比喻类似，至于“铁锈”、“石头”则用来比喻“回忆中不美好的事物”。

为什么这么说呢？从她几次大型演唱会中就可以看出。上世纪八十年代末期琼拜雅已经40岁，距diamonds and rust 1975年完成已近20年，在这次的演绎中，我们明显听到她唱这句歌词的时候却不是原句，而是Twenty years ago I bought you some cufflinks 。我们再来看看琼拜雅2007年在布拉格的演唱会，这句歌词又有了变化，这次变成了Forty years ago I bought you some cufflinks 。是的，也许你已经为之感动。这也许说明琼拜雅对于diamonds and rust的感情不是静止的，而是根据自己不断增加的阅历而变化的，也说明他对于鲍勃迪兰的感情几十年以来一直念念不忘。
如果了解了他们的故事，会更有助于理解这首歌的真正意思，也会更受感动。这也许也是diamonds and rust经久不衰的原因之一吧。
