约瑟夫·L·曼凯维奇
约瑟夫• L• 曼凯维奇(Joseph L• Mankiewicz),1909年2月1日，生于宾夕法尼亚州威尔克斯－巴里。他19岁哥伦比亚大学毕业，20年代任芝加哥《论坛报》驻柏林记者期间,为德国乌发影片公司把字幕译制成英语,并于归国后与兄长赫尔曼•J•曼凯维奇(《公民凯恩》的剧作者之一)一道为派拉蒙影业公司编剧。并于1946年开始执导影片。他的特色是善于应用潇洒的电影技巧，来消化他的近代性和城市风味，以及他那知识分子的机智与幽默、讽刺与谐趣。他的特色使他在最短的时间内成为知性派的头牌大导演。如1949年的《三妻艳史》，1950年的《慧星美人》，连续获得了奥斯卡最佳导演金像奖和最佳编剧金像奖。这在好莱坞影史上是稀有的光荣。1972年导演的《侦探》仍显出他宝刀未老。他的影片对白较多，但曲折机智。1993年2月5日病逝于纽约，享年83岁。
