生平
1927年2月20日生于美国佛罗里达州迈阿密一个黑人家庭。1945年首次在影片《那佛罗少年》中亮相，后偶尔在一些影片中跑龙套。1950年的《走投无路》是他首部主演的影片。1958年以反种族影片《挣脱锁链》赢得柏林影帝头衔，而迅速成为好莱坞头号黑人演员。1964年再以《田野里的百合花》勇夺奥斯卡最佳男主角奖，成为美国影史第一位黑人影帝。后又主演了《猜猜谁来吃晚餐》，《炎热的夏夜》等优秀影片。80年代又执导了多部优秀喜剧片，令他一度成为热门的“喜剧导演”。在幕前消失多年后，1987年以《美苏间谍战》得出。他的成功为日后其他黑人演员开辟了一条通往好莱坞的光明之路。2002年，为表彰其卓越贡献，美国电影艺术与科学学院为他颁发了奥斯卡荣誉奖。
