那幅画，是英国浪漫主义诗人、画家、雕刻家威廉·布莱克（WilliamBlake，1757 —1827）的作品，名为《伟大的红龙与日光蔽体的女人》（The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed in Sun）。其宗教意义应是取自《启示录》第十二章第一节：“天上现出种种异象：一妇人披日踏月，头戴十二星冠，正在分娩的痛苦中呼喊；一头红色巨龙，七头戴七冠长十角，尾拖三分之一星辰，在妇人前欲吞吃那将娩出的婴孩。妇人生下一男婴，立即被提到上帝宝座那里，将来他用铁杖辖管万国。妇人按上帝指引逃到旷野，她可以在那儿生存1260天。（And a great sign appeared in heaven: A woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars; and being with child, she cried travailing in birth, and was in pain to be delivered. And there was seen another sign in heaven: and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads, and ten horns, and on his heads seven diadems; and his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven; and cast them to the earth; and the dragon stood before the woman who was ready to be delivered; that when she should be delivered, he might devour her son.
