生平原名埃马缪尔·古德伯格，生于布加勒斯特，10岁时随家人移居美国，成长于纽约下东区。在纽约学院读书时加入“伊利莎白剧场”，并获得奖学金进入美国戏剧艺术学院进修。1913年起参加戏剧演出，两年后进入百老汇，演出了许多舞台剧。他只参与演出过一部无声片，但有声片兴起后，他开始频繁地在银幕中出现。1931年以《恶霸》倍受好评，之后在诸多影片中扮演了各种不同类型的角色。40年代一些心理片如《灵与肉》、《火车谋杀案》、《绿窗艳影》、《长恨天》等中的表演也给观众留下了深刻的印象。50年代在继续影视表演的同时，1956年在百老汇《午夜》一剧中又以老鳏夫一角获得成功。1973年1月因癌症去世。
