简介查尔斯·小罗伯特·雷德福（Charles Robert Redford Jr.）生于加利福尼亚州圣莫尼卡，父亲查尔斯·罗伯特·雷德福（Charles Robert Redford）是名会计，母亲玛莎·雷德福（Martha Redford）。少年时的小罗伯特·雷德福调皮捣蛋，曾因醉酒丧失了获棒球奖学金进入科罗拉多大学的机会。在普莱特美术学院学习并在欧洲从事绘画事业一阵子之后，他来到纽约的美国戏剧艺术学院学习表演。1959年首次在百老汇登台，进入影坛后以《虎豹小霸王》（Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid，1969）迅速窜红，那年他32岁。随后在1973年出演的两部影片《往日情怀》（The Way We Were，1973）和《骗中骗》（The Sting，1973）令他在接下来的三年内都是票房翘楚，也成就他成为70年代首屈一指的巨星。1980年，罗伯特·雷德福拍摄了导演处女作《普通人》（Ordinary People，1980），该片获当年奥斯卡最佳导演及最佳影片奖。80年代中，他还创立了至今成为现今国际上极有影响力的独立电影展“圣丹斯电影节”（Sundance Institute）。 1992年，他和布拉德·皮特出演的影片《大河恋》（A River Runs Through It，1992）又为他赢得了好评和观众的欢迎。1994年导演影片《机智问答》（Quiz Show，1994）也再次获得奥斯卡最佳导演提名。
