生于意大利西西里的巴勒莫。1903年随家移居美国。1921年，他开始为旧金山一家小公司拍摄只有一本的廉价影片。后来进入哥伦比亚影业公司当学徒，并担任过道具员、剪辑师、助理导演和噱头作者等职务。1926年，他因导演由著名喜剧演员H.朗东主演的《强有力的人》一片获得成功，使他决定朝喜剧片方向发展。从《金发女郎》到《狂乱的美国》，在美国影坛上造成了编剧李斯金导演卡普拉最佳搭档的黄金时代。他俩的才华日益受到重视。《一夜风流》、《富贵浮云》两片连获奥斯卡金奖。二战期间，曾协助我国剪接长篇纪录片《中国的抗战》。
