剧情介绍成龙饰演的李警探和克里斯塔克饰演的卡特警探，原本要到香港度假，这回李警探要把他最熟悉的东方文化介绍给卡特，可是就在他们准备享受美丽的东方之珠时，却发生了美国大使馆的爆炸事件，并且造成了两名警探的死伤，他们正在调查一桩伪钞走私案。这对中西合璧最Match的警探搭档开始一路调查这背后的阴谋，还牵扯出三合会的非法活动，他们为了缉凶展开一场惊险的冒险旅程，从香港一路追到洛杉矶，最后他们必须在赌城拉斯维加斯使出浑身解数，逮捕一名世界上最危险的黑道老大。
看点与3年前的《尖峰时刻》相比，这个续集投资规模几乎是之前的3倍，《尖》片的制作费用只有3500万美元左右，在好莱坞只能算得上是个中级制作，而这个续集则耗资9千多万美元，绝对称得上是个大手笔了。据说在这9千多万美元的开支中，演员的报酬就几乎占了一半。与三年前相比，成龙的片酬也飙升很多，达到1700万美元之多，另外还要加上盈利的分红。而除了《尖峰时刻》中的詹姆斯·卡特一角之外再无惊人之作的克里斯·塔克，在本片中的身价竟然直逼好莱坞大腕汤姆·克鲁斯，拿到2千万美元之多的片酬，多少有些让让人想不通。难怪连美国的影迷都替龙哥鸣不平，认为龙哥的片酬无论如何也不应该比那个黑小子的少。
影片的女主角当初传闻由“菲锋恋”的女主角、香港歌星王菲担纲，可能是《卧虎藏龙》在海外的扬威给了章子怡一个登上好莱坞银幕的机会。虽然国内影迷对章子怡的演技褒贬不一，但好莱坞的片商还是对其身上潜在的商业价值情有独钟。对于选章子怡出演片中的女主角，成龙坦言自己也并不十分满意，只是导演定了人选自己也不便多说。不过龙哥对同为华人同胞的章子怡在戏里戏外的还是十分照顾的，甚至还因此闹出了一段花边新闻。好莱坞的编导及演员对章子怡的演技也还算满意，只是称她的英语水平实在不怎么样，虽然接受了一段时间的强化训练，但还是有些不伦不类，多少对影片的对白有些影响。
