电话是通过电信号双向传输话音的设备。通常人们将亚历山大·格拉汉姆·贝尔(Alexander Graham Bell）认为是电话的发明者。美国国会2002年6月15日269号决议确认安东尼奥·穆齐（Antonio Meucci ）为电话的发明人。穆齐于1860年首次向公众展示了他的发明，并在纽约的意大利语报纸上发表了关于这项发明的介绍。

一部普通的电话历史上对电话的改进和发明包括：碳粉话筒，人工交换板，拨号盘，自动电话交换机，程控电话交换机，双音多频拨号，语音数字采样等。近年来的新技术包括，ISDN，DSL，模拟移动电话和数字移动电话等。
