剧情介绍喜玛拉雅山脉西麓高耸入云的K2峰是仅次于珠穆朗玛峰的世界第二高山峰。早在1892年就有欧洲的登山队尝试攀登K2峰，不过直到1954年才由一支意大利探险队顺利登顶，实现了征服K2的愿望。
彼得（克里斯·奥唐纳饰）本是一名登山好手，不过由于父亲在一次登山事故中意外丧生，所以彼得下定决心放弃登山。而彼得的妹妹安妮（罗宾·特妮饰）却不愿就此放弃，兄妹俩人因此不欢而散。安妮自行组织了一支探险队向K2峰发起冲击，不料遇上突变气候，探险队被困峭壁之上，进退维谷。为了营救安妮，彼得不得不披挂上阵，再度挑战K2极限！

幕后制作凭借《黄金眼》全球3亿5000万美元的票房，新西兰导演马丁·坎贝尔不但在好莱坞创下了骄人业绩，还为007系列影片带来了新气息和新契机。随后的《佐罗的面具》同样让影坛同行刮目相看，全球票房仍达到了2亿5000万，安东尼奥·班德拉斯和凯瑟琳·泽塔-琼斯也由此势头更劲。对于执导这部《垂直极限》，马丁表现得雄心勃勃，因为此前影史上登山题材的作品仅有一部《绝岭雄风》值得称道，所以马丁的表现空间可谓相当开阔，他甚至夸下海口：《垂直极限》一定超越《绝岭雄风》，成为最佳登山题材影片。
负责影片剧本的是编剧罗伯特·金，《割喉岛》便出自他的笔下，除了擅长惊险题材外，罗伯特还是一位喜剧及儿童影视作品编剧，所以他的作品惊险之余不乏诙谐。
尽管影片讲述的是发生在K2峰的故事，但为了便于拍摄，片中的K2峰其实是在巴基斯坦的喀拉昆仑山脉拍摄，而情节画面的背景则选在新西兰的库克山脉，这里的地貌与喜马拉雅山脉极其相似，且海拔较低。虽然不少镜头可以在库克山脉实景拍摄，但一些高难度镜头还是要借助于特效，担纲本片特效总监的是内尔·考博德，曾监制《角斗士》、《拯救大兵瑞恩》和《第五元素》等很多票房经典。
精彩花絮·片头出现的没有脚趾的脚是登山运动员马克的脚，1994年，他攀登珠峰时夜间户外宿营，脚趾因冻伤而被截掉。
·片中的部分特技是由演员亲自完成的。
·导演马丁·坎贝尔首次回到家乡新西兰拍摄。
