旧金山女律师克莱尔与成功商人汤姆一直过着令人羡慕的婚姻生活。然而这种平静瞬息之间就被打破了，就在两人在街巷中散步时，却有不知何处来的大批军警忽然把两人围住，把汤姆强行带走。几经查问，克莱尔终于被告知，丈夫曾是秘密军人，而军方现正指控他在巴西的萨尔瓦多犯下了“屠杀罪”！就在克莱尔想要深入调查此事并为自己的丈夫辩护时，军方又借口此事牵涉军事机密不能公开审讯，汤姆只能在军事法庭接受秘密审判，整个事件云山雾罩般地蒙着一层薄纱。
不得已，克莱尔找来军事法庭律师查尔斯·格瑞姆一起调查这场诡异的官司。但汤姆到底有罪或是无罪？连克莱尔自己心中也充满着疑惑。查尔斯能否帮助克莱尔弄清真相？汤姆能否与克莱尔复合？一切都将在查尔斯把整个案件推向公开法庭之时，大白于天下。

能干的克莱尔（阿什莉·贾德饰）是旧金山的一名女律师，她的丈夫是成功商人汤姆（詹姆斯·卡维泽饰），他俩的生活惬意美感，令人艳羡。他们正计划着给家里添个小生命。但是，美梦刹那间被突如其来的事件粉碎了——FBI冲进家门，以谋杀罪名强行将汤姆带走了，留下震惊莫名的的克莱尔。根据FBI的解释，汤姆本名叫做雷纳德·查普曼，过去是一名军事秘密间谍，在萨尔瓦多出任务时，曾屠杀当地市民，因此被通缉长达15年之久。克莱尔则认为FBI一定是认错人了，然而汤姆却承认他就是雷纳德·查普曼，曾经参与这项秘密军事行动，但他向克莱尔保证，他完全没有参与整起杀害无辜的动作，凶手想拿他当代罪羔羊，陷他于不义，因为他可能出面指证谁才是真正策动和安排那次屠杀的主谋。就在克莱尔想要深入调查此事并为自己的丈夫辩护时，军方又借口此事牵涉军事机密不能公开审讯，汤姆只能在军事法庭接受秘密审判。克莱尔只得找来军事法庭律师查尔斯·格瑞姆（摩根·弗里曼饰）一起调查这场诡异的官司。克莱尔和格瑞姆意识到，这整件事中间牵涉到多位显要不为人知的卑劣丑闻及秘密，为了追出真相，克莱尔很可能要赔上自己的事业，甚至是她的生命……
