Murphy青少年就读Presentation Brothers College，之后在University College Cork （UCC）念法律。一开始他的兴趣在於音乐，他在一个受Frank Zappa影响的乐团「Sons of Mr. Greengenes」担任吉他手。但离开大学后，他的兴趣转移到演戏。 他第一个重要的脚色是UCC戏剧社（UCC Drama Society）制作的「Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme」。之后他出现在职业舞台演出 Pat Kiernan导演、Enda Walsh编剧的「Disco Pigs」。 「Disco Pigs」在伦敦、爱丁堡、Cork巡回表演后，Mruphy从UCC辍学。 （根据他在英Blag杂志的说法，他大一被当，第二年重修到一半人就跑了，采访的女记者很委婉地说他很诚实） 「Disco Pigs」是Murphy第一个突破，他是1996年第一个版本的男主角，之后Kirsten Sheridan在2001年的电影版再度雇用他担任男主角，他也 2005年BoP的记者会，有人问他你不是试镜过蝙蝠侠吗？则回答：「我看起来像他妈的蝙蝠侠吗？」让在场记者陷入一片静默，於是有人挑战他的极限问一个问题：「比起28 Days Later的全裸演出和Breakfast on Pluto的男扮女装，你觉得哪一个比较困难？」） 近来他的作品有爱尔兰导演Neil Jordan导演、Patrick McCabe的小说改编的「Breakfast on Pluto」和英国左派导演Ken Loach描绘爱尔兰独立的「The Wind That Shakes the Barley」。
