剧情介绍公元2035年。自从世界1996年被一种致命病毒侵袭之后，剩余的少数人类就只能生活在地下，苟且偷生。为了改变这一情况，科学家们设计出一个计划去改变这 一切。囚徒詹姆斯·科尔被强迫作为志愿者，由2035年穿越时空回到1996年追查当年病毒扩散的原因，以便由科学家想办法预防并阻止它的发生。然而，时光穿越出现了误差，科尔被送到了1990年的巴尔的摩。他被精神病医生凯瑟琳·雪莉诊断为精神分裂和幻想症，因为他向人们描述6年后将有50亿人口死于一场病毒灾难。在疯人院中，他与病友杰弗里·戈因斯格外谈得来，戈因斯主动帮助他逃出了疯人院，科尔也因此又回到了2035年。第二次时空穿越没有出问题，但科尔却发现病毒的发源地是在费城。于是他找到了凯瑟琳，让她帮助他去费城，寻找释放病毒的罪魁祸首：十二猴军团。他们以这种怪异的图案（十二只猴子围成一圈）为标志。从科尔腿部取出的子弹证实了科尔的确不是属于这个时代的人，凯瑟琳相信了他的话，决心帮助他挽救人类的命运。“十二猴军团”原来是个“动物解放运动协会”，它的组织者正是六年前科尔的朋友杰弗里。而杰弗里的父亲却是著名的病毒专家科兰德，杰弗里是个疯狂的为动物自由而战的人，他绑架了父亲，组织了十二猴军团，只不过要将被科兰德博士关入动物园的动物全部释放出来。那场致命的病毒根本与十二猴军团无关。科尔决定不再理会未来的事，正当他与凯瑟琳在机场憧憬着美好的生活时，却意外地发现博士的助手皮特斯才是真正的罪魁祸首，对病毒的追踪并没有结束。

·They're Coming.
幕后制作这是一部冷调子的科幻惊悚片，故事情节游走于过去、现在、未来的时空之间，观众一不留神就会对跳跃式的叙事感到混乱。英国导演特里·吉列姆的风格一向比较偏重知性思考而非热闹的动作场面，故本片给人留下不少可供思索回味之处。布拉德·彼特饰演疯疯癫癫的精神病患者，成功地破坏了他的金童形象，获奥斯卡最佳男配角提名。
精彩花絮·导演特里·吉列姆跟布鲁斯·威利斯第一次见面是为他的电影《渔王》选角时。吉列姆对威利斯在《虎胆龙威》里的一个细节(威利斯清除脚上玻璃时谈到妻子)印象深刻，谈话中得知这是威利斯自己的发挥。他一直记得这些并且在拍摄本片时想到了威利斯。由于预算紧张，那时已经是明星的威利斯基本是免费出演，仅仅因为他想跟吉列姆合作。影片发行后他才拿到钱。
·导演吉列姆给布鲁斯·威利斯列了一张清单，告诉他表演上要避免的东西，包括威利斯很经典的"坚定而忧郁的眼神"。
·本片的灵感来自法国导演Chris Marker1962年拍的实验性短片《Jetée, La》。但是特里·吉列姆在拍摄之前并没有看过这部片子。
