剧情介绍1593年的夏天，伦敦剧场界的闪亮新星威廉莎士比亚面临一个重大的危机，他失去写作的灵感，那是伊莉莎白一世的时代，充满多采多姿的娱乐和趣事，伟大的莎翁却江郎才尽，不管他用什么方法，不管剧场老板和债主给他多大的压力，他就是没有创作下一出戏的灵感和动力，这出戏叫作「罗密欧与海盗之女桃丝」。
莎士比亚需要一名女神激发他的灵感，没想到现实生活竟然反映他的创作，他爱上一个女孩，并将他带入他自己写的戏剧之中。
一位名叫薇奥拉的小姐不顾当时女人不能粉墨登场的禁令，假扮成男人，前去剧场为莎士比亚试演，不过年轻的莎翁很快就发现她是女人，他们俩立刻坠入爱河，这时候莎翁的灵感如泉涌，将他们的爱情付诸成文字，薇拉成为他生命中的茱丽叶，而他这个罗密欧也找到生存的意义。
可是莎翁的运气没那么好，虽然他下笔如神，可是他却得面对薇奥拉必须嫁给魏瑟爵士的残酷事实。
在一场身份混淆、错综复杂的乌龙闹剧中，大吃乾醋的丈夫和老婆的情人决斗，私订终身的情侣偷偷调情，而年轻的莎翁不但得为他的剧本想出完美的结局，也得为他自己的爱情找到快乐的结局。
制作背景「莎翁情史」的拍摄起源其实很简单，编剧兼制片马克诺曼的儿子在学校研究伊丽莎白一世时期的剧作，他曾问父亲莎翁撰写「罗密欧与朱丽叶」的灵感来自何方，他认为那一定是个坠入爱河的人所写的，于是就衍生出「莎翁情史」这个有趣的故事。诺曼认为莎翁的「罗密欧与朱丽叶」成功地融合许多重要的戏剧元素，一开始是个爱情故事和喜剧情节，最后风格遽变，一下子转变成下场凄惨的悲剧，这在当时是非常极端的风格。
由于莎士比亚本身已婚，因此诺曼想出故事就是，莎翁爱上他剧中的女演员，这样一来这段爱情注定不能结合，而且和「罗密欧与朱丽叶」的剧情互相呼应，增加戏剧的张力。

幕后制作莎士比亚是在怎样的情况下创作出《罗密欧与朱丽叶》的？编剧利用史料的空白，提出一种大胆假想。莎翁年代的舞台只有男演员，不用女演员，就像我国以前的京剧。欣赏该片需要大量文化背景，影片中还故意设置了许多“违反真实”的“穿帮细节”，制造出一种自嘲式幽默以及跟现实的纽带。片中演员均有一流的表演，帕尔特洛的维奥拉和丹奇的女王尤其值得称道。影片剧情峰回路转、台词风趣睿智、风格神采飞扬、内容丰富多彩，它借助莎翁的戏剧方式描写莎翁的生平事迹，中间还穿插着莎翁名剧的精彩片断，最后自己也取得了近乎莎剧的成就。本片荣获第71届奥斯卡最佳影片、最佳女主角、最佳女配角等7项大奖。一般认为，它将古装文艺片提升到一个全新的高度。1999年南加州大学的电影系学生拍摄了一部八分钟的短片，叫做《恋爱中的卢卡斯》（George Lucas in Love），用相同的套路表现当年大师兄卢卡斯创作《星球大战》的情形，十分爆笑。
