剧情简介1964年6月21日，三K党徒在美国密西西比州劫持一辆载有三名民权主义者的旅行车，从此他们便失去踪影。为调查他们的下落，联邦调查局派来两名特工人员——艾伦·沃得和鲁珀特·安德森。调查工作进展困难，无论白人或黑人都不对他们说实话。沃德决定派海军后备队参加行动。当地的三K党以袭击黑人和火烧教堂作为回答。小镇的副镇长皮尔就是个三K党徒。他经常野蛮地殴打他娇小的妻子，痛苦的皮尔太太爱上了同情她的安德森。安德森敏锐地嗅出皮尔太太可能是个关键的知情人。
