Craig Brown claimed that Mears was 'one of the best young right backs in the country' when he signed him in July 2002.

Ironically, Mears has yet to make a first team appearance in his favoured position and his versatility has led to him being used in a variety of roles from centre forward to centre back.

His highlight of last season was probably the stunning 30-yard goal, his first for the club, he scored in the 5-1 defeat at Reading.
