剧情介绍版本一
一幢位于三藩市中心的摩天大楼顶楼内，正举行落成典礼。突然下层冒出熊熊烈火，不久已渐渐蔓延到阁楼，所有宾客被围困。全面展现了一栋135层高的“豆腐渣”工程建筑，是如何在落成当天就照耀全城，人们亲眼目睹整幢楼坍塌的惨剧，真人出演火光冲天的现场。摩天大厦中燃起熊熊大火，一些人被热浪抛出窗户，被困的人们不堪火烤而跳楼解脱，消防队长及楼宇设计师被急召到现场了解情况，最后成为超级英雄。

虚构的世界第一高楼落成开业，在顶层举行了庆典。就在达官贵人济济一堂之时，大楼中层某处因为电线短路而失火。由于超高层建筑特有的“烟囱效应”，火势迅速蔓延并封锁了逃生之路。顶层的人们只能由空中逃跑。最后包括州长在内的一批人葬身火海。后来，受难者们设法炸开顶层的水塔熄灭了大火。
版本三
故事描述威廉·霍尔登在自己所拥有的摩天楼顶层举行开幕酒会，但其女婿李察德·张伯伦负责的建筑工程偷工减料，以致电线走火酿成巨灾。消防队长史蒂夫·麦奎因在大楼工程师保罗·纽曼的协助下一边救人一边灭火，几经波折终于爆破楼顶的巨型水箱将大火扑灭。

幕后制作70年代轰动一时的经典灾难片，不但巨星如云，而且是第一部以摩天楼大火灾为题材的巨制。随着电影特技的突飞猛进，本片的火灾场面已不算什么，节奏的处理也比较拖滞，但整体而言仍有一定的娱乐性。约翰·吉尔勒明处理这部角色众多气氛热闹的影片可说用足了劲，在当年曾引起大众对高楼防火安全的重视。影片以拍摄技术高难度著称。
