SUNY'S CROWN JEWEL

The University at Buffalo was founded in 1846 as a private medical college and merged with the State University of New York system in 1962. Today UB is New York State's premier public center for graduate and professional education, as well as the state's largest and most comprehensive public university. A member of the prestigious Association of American Universities, the University at Buffalo stands in the first rank among the nation's research-intensive public universities.UB's Center for Computational Research is one of the world's leading academic high-performance computing sites.

Our strengths in medicine, engineering, and computer science enable us to conduct multidisciplinary research and provide education at a level of excellence that few universities can match. The faculty of UB's professional schools share an unusually strong research orientation with their counterparts in the arts and sciences, and together they have established an outstanding record of research, scholarship, and creative activity.

Buffalo — dubbed "The City of Good Neighbors" — is the second-largest city in New York State, yet it's a big city with a hometown feel. World-class art galleries and museums, a comprehensive city-wide system of parks and greenspace designed by renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, and major and minor league sports teams are just a few of the wide array of cultural and recreational elements that make Buffalo such a great place to study, work, and live.

The University at Buffalo offers outstanding research and educational opportunities, along with a commitment to our public service mission of outreach to local and global communities—the kind of meaningful experiences that last a lifetime

UB's bustling North Campus, where most of the university's core academic programs are offered, is located in suburban Amherst. Opened in the early 1970s, the North Campus currently has more than 100 buildings and more on the way, including ongoing construction of new apartment-style student housing, as well as state-of-the-art academic buildings.

The picturesque South Campus, located three miles away from the North Campus in a residential section of Buffalo, was the university's home for much of the 20th century. Here ivy-covered buildings and a traditional bell tower complement new research and teaching facilities. The Schools of Architecture and Planning, Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Dental Medicine, Public Health and Health Professions, and Nursing are headquartered on the South Campus.
