伊维格市发生了一件女童凶杀案，声名显赫的法律系教授阿姆斯壮，接到死刑犯巴比的请求信，声称当年是屈打成招认罪，阿姆斯壮来到小镇重审当年轰动一时的谋杀案，循线追查下真凶呼之欲出，剧情急转直下。

Paul Armstrong是哈佛大学著名法律系教授，退出诉讼界已多年。他被来自佛罗里达州的一名青年黑人学生Bobby的鸣冤信而感动了：原来当地警方为了侦破一个小女孩的绑架谋杀案，严刑逼供Bobby，使这位有着大好前途的年轻人屈打成招沦为死囚。Paul决定挺身而出为其辩护，经过周密调查，在Bobby的狱友提供的信息帮助下，Paul似乎找到了真凶，足以还Bobby清白之身。但事情并不像看起来这样美好。事实上，Bobby确实是杀人凶手，这一切只是他精心策划的一次报复行动：Paul的妻子时一名检察官，当年曾下令关押Bobby致使后者在狱中受到非人折磨……果然，Bobby出狱后绑架了Paul的家人，Paul后悔已经来不及了……
