剧情介绍安妮是多伦多的一名历史教授，无论是事业，亦或个人生活，她最近的境况都十分不如意。第二任丈夫刚刚去世，继女茜莉亚对安妮充满怨恨，认为她应对父亲的死负责。同时儿子拉菲与茜莉亚陷入了一段青春之恋中。拉菲的父亲，安妮的第一任丈夫，是一名亚美尼亚族“自由斗士”，或者说“恐怖分子”，据传在一次刺杀土耳其外交官的行动中丧生。安妮撰写了一本亚美尼亚画家阿舍尔·高基的传记，高基最有名的作品是一幅他母亲的肖像，他以此来纪念死于饥饿的老人。
安妮被亚美尼亚导演爱德华聘任为其最新电影的顾问，这部根据1917年一本纪实作品《一个美国医生在土耳其》改编的影片，记叙了1915年土耳其东部一座亚美尼亚族城市瓦城被围一役中，百万当地人惨遭屠戮的悲剧。拉菲凭借母亲的关系得以在剧组中谋得一职，他前往土耳其取景，拍摄那些荒城遗迹。
当拉菲带着胶片返回加拿大时，却在海关受到拦截和盘问。即将退休的检察人员大卫怀疑他携带的胶片盒里藏有毒品，虽然最终证明这只是一场误会，但在交谈中拉菲却引起了大卫的兴趣，这位少年看来很乐意跟他聊聊自己那些烦心事，而与此同时大卫和儿子菲利普之间也颇多摩擦。
菲利普的同性恋身份一直让大卫无法接受。他的恋人阿里有一半土耳其血统，恰巧在爱德华的那部电影中扮演角色。但随着拍摄的进行，阿里却对他所饰演的恶魔般穷凶极恶的土耳其军官一角感到越来越质疑和困惑。
