Igor Vladimirovich Akinfeyev (Russian: Игорь Владимирович Акинфеев) (born on April 8, 1986 in Vidnoye) is a Russian football (soccer) goalkeeper currently playing for CSKA Moscow.
He broke into the CSKA starting lineup at the age of 17, and has been the No 1 at the club ever since, gathering various honors including a UEFA Cup and Two National Championships. He has been tipped to become one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
Comparisons with the great Russian goalkeeper of the past Lev Yashin have been mooted after Akinfeyev recently won the ‘Zvezda’ trophy that is awarded to the best football player in the area that was the former Soviet Union.
In his second Champions League campaign he had a dry spell of 362 minutes prior to conceding a goal on Matchday 5 against FC Porto.
Akinfeyev has been linked with various moves away from CSKA, including to 2005/06 Champions League opponents Arsenal F.C.
Club
A product of the PFC CSKA Moskva youth system, Akinfeev was repeatedly promoted above his age group due to his prodigious talent. By the age of 16 he had broken into the reserve team, and in the 2003 season made his debut in a Russian League Cup game, before gradually ousting Russian Under-21 goalkeeper Veniamin Mandrykin as CSKA's No1. His position was well deserved as he helped CSKA to their first championship of the post-Soviet era in 2003. He reclaimed that title again in 2005, and also helped CSKA win the 2006 Russian Cup and Super Cup. Most impressively, he was an ever present in Europe in 2004/05 as the Russian club went all the way to the UEFA Cup final and ultimately defeated Sporting Clube de Portugal in Lisbon to take the trophy for the first time.
National team
At the age of 16 Akinfeev represented his nation in qualifying for the UEFA European Under-17 Championship and even made his debut at U21 level. He swiftly worked his way up the ranks and won his first senior cap only 20 days after his 18th birthday, playing all 90 minutes of a 3-2 defeat against Norway. His selection for the 23-man squad for UEFA EURO 2004™ meant he was the youngest player in the tournament.
