A long-legged central defender who has established himself as one of Europe's premier talents, Vincent Kompany poses an imposing barrier for opposing attackers, with his strength and power making him a formidable opponent.

Club

Kompany joined RSC Anderlecht at the age of six and made his first-team debut in July 2003 in a UEFA Champions League second qualifying round tie against AFC Rapid Bucuresti. He became a regular in the championship-winning team of 2003/04, playing 29 times, and continued that form into the following campaign as he was voted Belgian Footballer of the Year and Young Player of the Year. After making two UEFA Champions League appearances for Anderlecht during 2005/06, including scoring the winner at Real Betis Balompié, the season was disrupted by a shoulder injury. Long a target for Europe's top clubs, at the end of the campaign Hamburger SV won the race for his signature.

National team

His flirtation with Belgium's youth sides ended in October 2003 when he was selected, aged 17, for the vital UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifier against Estonia - making him the youngest player since the legendary Paul Van Himst in 1960 to earn a call-up. He was a first-choice in 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifying.

Did you know?

Although he was beaten by team-mate Aruna Dindane to the 2003/04 Belgian Footballer of the Year award, Kompany was voted Anderlecht's best player by the club's fans and also won the Ebony Shoe - an award given to the best player of African origin in Belgium.
