故事发生在60年代的一个巴黎小镇上。男主角（奥玛 沙里夫 饰）是个阿拉伯人，年迈的他开了间卖杂货的小店维持生活。头发花白的他非常孤独，却是个善良的老人，直到有一天一个犹太小男孩的出现，才打破了他寂寞的生活，一老一少，两个不同种族的人走到一起，在他们之间产生了忘年的友谊，也从对方身上找到了生活的乐趣……

在巴黎，“阿拉伯”意味着“从晚8点到半夜全部对外开放”，这是巴黎的一家穆斯林商店店主亚伯拉罕先生（奥马尔－谢里夫饰）用来形容他所处的巴黎低层社会的环境常用的狡猾定义。在这部影片当中皮埃尔－宝兰格饰演“莫莫”（Momo），他是一个年仅16岁的小男孩，但却急于抛却自己的处子之身，他有这种想法主要是因为受到他所处的低层社会生活环境的影响。莫莫急于想要学习并融入这个世界的生活方式当中，即使这可能意味着要为此付出一定的代价。当他的青春期冲动在城市阴暗角落里那些困惑的女人处得到满足时，莫莫的思想已经不再像以前那么单纯了，他开始对思想更深层次的痛苦、哲学以及宗教产生了好奇心理。亚伯拉罕先生是家杂货店的老板，莫莫几乎每天都要到他那里为自己已经失业的、无情的父亲买面包，亚伯拉罕先生注意到了莫莫身上的这种变化。从莫莫嘴里，亚伯拉罕先生麻木的神经开始苏醒，逐步开始认识他所在的巴黎下层社会的人民的生活。
