幕后制作本片讲述田鼠太太在一群聪明的大老鼠的帮助下救活了自己孩子的故事。影片制作精细考究，剧作紧凑、引人入胜，上映后大受观众喜爱，并获得美国土星（saturn）最佳动画片奖。影片里共使用了600多种颜色。其中，化学家老鼠安吉斯先生就用了26种颜色。影片里共有1078个场景，所有场景都接受单轨连续拍摄测试，其中一些被重新设计。全片耗资7百万美元，这在1982年的美国可以称得上是巨资了。Don Bluth、John Pomeroy和Gary Goldman为了本片离开了迪斯尼工作室，原因是迪斯尼负责人认为本片过于阴暗，缺乏商业前景而拒绝拍摄。在他们之后不久又有20个迪斯尼动画工作者无法忍受迪斯尼带来的商业压力而离开迪斯尼奔赴本片剧组。影片上映之初遇上了反迪斯尼动画片大潮，但这未能影响该片的票房成绩。导演Don Bluth用了六个月的时间专心致力于摄影机的设计详述。另外的十四个月Bluth和他的同事不断尝试试验摄影机机位以及相关技术问题。为了开场时聪慧的老年鼠在墨水池上给书标金字一场戏，剧组甚至租用了多翼模航飞机。田鼠妈妈的名字NIMH正好是美国国家精神病研究所（National Institute of Mental Health）的缩写。
