剧情介绍阿历克斯·谢尔登（鲁克·威尔逊）是个作家，他有个小麻烦就是嗜赌如命，欠下了古巴黑手党100万的赌债。在把他吊在窗户外面，砸了他的笔记本后，这些暴徒给阿历克斯下了最后通牒：要么在30天内偿还清债务，要么等死。阿历克斯现在唯一能指望的就是写完他的小说。关于这部小说他的脑子里已经有了一些想法，他这样写道:"这是关于一段无可救药的爱情的故事，她就像病毒一样啃噬一个人的内心。这是部喜剧。"但是没了灵感和笔记本电脑的阿历克斯不知道该怎样在纸上写出来，他雇佣了固执己见的速记员艾玛·迪斯墨（凯特·哈德森）帮助他完成小说。
亚当·辛普利的故事很快就出炉了，这个虚构的亚当是个浪漫的年轻作家，受雇于优雅漂亮但经济上困窘的法国女人珀琳娜（苏菲·玛尔索）来辅导她的孩子们。一段恋情就发生在他们之间。
同时，阿历克斯和艾玛不分昼夜地在一起探讨小说。艾玛在每一个关键地方都给阿历克斯启示，这都影响了他和他的故事。很快，现实生活就模仿艺术，而艺术也在模仿生活。
