剧情介绍祖鲁族是非洲最善战的土著，与英军间惨烈的战争。
本片讲述19世纪末英军在非洲的一处要塞人手不足，但遭到成千上万当地土著祖鲁人的进攻。祖鲁族是非洲最善战的民族，与英军发生激烈交战。英军顽强抵抗，最终以小胜大。这是一个真实故事，但具有强烈的殖民色彩。

本片在处理双方的对战的场面时，不只传达英国士兵的爱国情操，也同时表现祖鲁战士为保护乡土，誓死如归的勇气，如此一来，观众可以从两种角度去思考这场战役，并对双方都寄予同情与敬佩……由于影片一半的篇幅描写声势浩大的战争场面，加上当地土著居民的奇风异俗，故仍能吸引观众。1979年推出前传《天摇地荡震山河》（Zulu Dawn，又译《血海山河》），由荷兰和美国联合摄制，讲英国人鲁莽入侵祖鲁部落，造成1879年的惨败。影片动作场面相当恢宏。
