剧情介绍电影讲的是一个真实的故事。主人公是73岁的阿尔文·史特雷特（Alvin Straight，由理查德·法恩斯沃斯Richard Farnsworth扮演），阿尔文老得可不漂亮。他眼瞎得不能再开车了，走路还要靠两根拐棍。阿尔文和有智力障碍的女儿罗斯（希茜·史佩赛克Sissy Spacek扮演）住在一起，过着平静朴素的生活，两人的休闲方式不是看电视，而是一块儿观看暴风雨和闪电。后来，阿尔文接到一个电话，得知他的弟弟莱尔（Lyle，由哈里·迪恩·史坦顿Harry DeanStanton扮演）得了中风。兄弟俩由于不合，已经十年没说过话了。阿尔文觉得该去看看他，解决一下两人的矛盾。阿尔文把1966年份产的老割草机上，身上只带着50美元、一堆雪茄，就开着割草机，从依阿华出发前往威斯康星州了。 旅程中，阿尔文遇上了各种各样的人，有离家出走的怀孕少女，有二战退伍老兵，还有一个孤独的牧师；这些人的共同点是，他们都是正派的美国人，为人善良，说话简单清楚（除了一群骑自行车的傲慢的年轻人）。影片中，我们年老的主人公，对待他遇到的那些人彬彬有礼，有一种老式的迷人风度。影片展现的是人性的善良，但绝不是脆弱。有一种不事张扬的美，更可打动我们的心。
相关评论这部影片的一个大缺陷是，影片太长，几乎两个小时。那种深思熟虑、不紧不慢的节奏，不免让你有点如坐针毡，觉得电影缺乏丰富的故事情节，缺少出人意料的惊喜。另一处美中不足是，导演林奇对一些场景的拍摄用了自然长镜头。这些场景很遥远，加上导演把影片音量又降低了，于是很难看清楚、听清楚到底发生着什么事。
但影片颇有几方面，可弥补以上不足。导演林奇和传奇摄影师弗雷迪·弗朗西斯（Freddie Francis）营造了优美的环境布景——荒凉的谷仓、宁静的星光之夜，再配上哀伤的背景音乐。最棒的是理查德·法恩斯沃斯的顶级表演，他扮演的阿尔文·史特雷特是个粗得有趣的人，他忧伤深情的蓝眼睛背后，隐藏着深切的同情心。当一个骑车人以居高临下的态度问阿尔文，他活这么大岁数到底学到了什么，阿尔文简单地回答说：“我知道怎么把麦粒和麦壳分开，让麦粒落到一边。”《简单故事》里的阿尔文饱经风霜，理查德的表演获奥斯卡提名当之无愧。
幕后制作这是一部改编自真人真事的公路电影，导演林奇一改其诡异的风格，以极为朴实内敛的手法，说一个简单动人的小故事，正如同英文片名的双关弦外之音一般。就在这一段交织着追忆与悔恨的漫长旅程中，老人最后必然将成功地进入每个观众的心底，让人们在他的情绪里搜寻自己记忆中与他重合之处。老牌演员理查德德 法恩斯沃思饰演片中主角史崔特先生，演出令人动容。他曾经演过《万夫莫敌》、《跃马山庄》等经典名片，接演本片后，还因此被提名角逐奥斯卡金像奖最佳男演员奖项，不过，他却在2000年10月因为久病厌世，而举枪自尽身亡，本片也成为他在影坛的告别遗作。
精彩花絮·电影根据真实故事改编。真正的艾尔文·史崔特(1920年—1996年)，在他的旅行结束后还活了三年。
·电影没有任何特映，只有一则宣传片。除此之外，没有分成段落，大卫·林奇希望这部电影是一个完整的过程，而不是一段断场景。
