迈克尔·克拉克·邓肯(Michael Clarke Duncan)于1957年出生在伊利诺斯州芝加哥南区的一个单亲家庭，是由母亲抚养带大的。尽管出生在毒品和酗酒流行的区域，迈克尔却是一个不沾毒品的孝顺儿。就在他在密西西比阿尔康州立大学就读期间，他因为母亲患病而辍学回家，担负起了支撑家庭的重担。迈克尔小时候的愿望是踢足球而不是艺术表演，但是他的这种想法遭到了母亲的反对，因为她担心他会因此而受到伤害。于是，他就把目标转向艺术表演，梦想成为一个著名的演员。中学毕业后，迈克尔在坎卡基社区大学读书。大学毕业后，他在芝加哥的民族天然气公司做工，为该公司开挖地沟。此后不久，迈克尔来到了好莱坞，开始在影片中出演一些小的角色，并兼任保镖工作，他的雇主包括威尔·史密斯、马丁·劳伦斯、杰米·福克斯、LL·库尔·J和臭名昭著的B·I·G。
