Damian Lewis生于伦敦，小时候就读于伊顿公学，之后进入Guildhall School学习音乐和戏剧。毕业后，他加入英国剧院协会，从1993-1998年间，演出了大量的戏剧，主要是在皇家莎士比亚公司。在那段时间，他在百老汇Ralph Fiennes’中演过哈姆雷特，当然在伦敦也演过。
他最著名的电视剧是，在HBO短剧Band of Brothers中饰演美国二战英雄Winters，和在The Forsyte Saga第一季和第二季中刻画了Soames Forsyte ，因此得到金球奖提名。
