一八六零年代，英国伦敦。女主角之一苏从小就在贼窝长大，而另一位女主角莫德则成长在一个
荒僻的大庄园，因为有机会继承大笔遗产，而被不少人虎视眈眈，此时绰号“绅士”的流氓设计
让苏去做莫德的贴身女佣，以便知己知彼，达到他与莫德结婚并瓜分财产的目的.
但所发生的一切却是我们始料未及的……
两个孤女苏·特林德和莫德·莉莉身世相仿，同病相怜。两人之间产生了莫名其妙的感情，而这种感情又因为两个人处境的不同和苏所肩负的功利目的更加扑朔迷离。苏从小失去父母，在"充满亲情"的贼窝里长大，眼见的都是盗贼和流氓。莫德则是个继承了一大笔遗产的孤女，四周到处都是觊觎她财产的阴险之徒。苏被绰号"绅士"的老流氓理查德派去接近莫德，试图通过她获得莫德信任，达到让两人结婚最终侵吞莫德财产的目的。事情之后，莫德将被送入疯人院。苏在与莫德交往的过程中，发现自己深深喜欢上了脾气温柔的莫德。她既不想对不住同伙"绅士"，也不想伤害她喜欢的莫德，苏在情与理面前不知所措。
